Meet Cathy

Hello and Welcome!

I am Health Coach Cathy Ormon, and I would like to share my story with you.

Cathy Ormon Health CoachMy long and winding journey to becoming a Health Coach…

… actually started back in my teen years.  I have always believed in eating healthy, whole foods and in living a balanced life.  As a teen in school I recall doing reports on such topics as ‘the effects of stress’ and ‘the healing nature of plants and spices’ (amazingly, I still have those reports!), and I belonged to a Yoga Club – somewhat radical, and not so cool for the early 1970’s! Health-wise – I have always had a very sensitive digestive system, yet I generally knew which foods to avoid (through instinct, by connecting with my body and through simple cause and effect).

Fast forward a few years. My husband David and I, along with our two young children were lacto-ovo vegetarian.  After about 10 years as vegetarians we returned to a conventional non-vegetarian diet, due to the social pressures we felt, particularly with our children’s school and social situation. Vegetarianism was definitely not well accepted in the 1980s!  So, we started to eat the typical standard North American diet of convenient processed foods, including using a microwave and all the other things that typically go along with a fast-paced life and a growing family.

When David and I were in our forties (late 1990’s) we were starting to experience common chronic health issues. At the time, we seemed to be unable to pinpoint the reasons for these issues and despite our best efforts, we couldn’t find any answers to these issues.  Both David and I were gaining weight, David started to have high blood pressure, and I had debilitating hip and joint pain for which the doctors could find no real cause – ‘must be arthritis’ they told me. I spent 8 years taking both pain and anti-inflammatory meds for my joint and hip pain before the doctors finally agreed to replace my left hip in 2006.  The hip replacement was successful and I could finally stop taking the pain and anti-inflammatory meds.  By then, my digestive system was really struggling – a nasty side effect of all those meds. In 2008 I was diagnosed with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), which resulted in many dietary changes.  Then in 2009 I finally started listening to my body and my instincts again – and I quit eating wheat and gluten.  Even with many positive dietary changes, I still had very low energy and joint pain, and I didn’t know why.

In January 2011, David and I still had many health issues. I had reached the point of having a health crisis. I was overweight, had no energy, my digestion was a mess, my joints still hurt, I could not get rid of a cold virus, and I was definitely having issues with spiking and crashing blood sugar (almost certainly pre-diabetes). My Doctor diagnosed my condition as ‘systemic inflammation’ and told me there was no treatment available for it. Frustrated, I realized that if David and I were to improve our health, it was totally up to us!  By the Grace of God, I found a 3 month health coaching program, which David and I both took. So, once again we did a complete change of lifestyle habits: started to eat more raw foods and more whole foods, permanently changed our eating to a low glycemic diet, started to take high quality cellular nutrition (supplements), and started to get the exercise our bodies needed.  The results of the changes and the 3 month program were totally phenomenal!  Both of us got rid of excess weight, David eliminated the need for high blood pressure meds (permanently!!), my digestive system almost completely healed, my energy increased dramatically, and I no longer had debilitating joint pain! Today, those healthy changes are the permanent lifestyle we live and we are the healthiest that we have ever been!!

Through my own personal experiences, health struggles and healing – I know that everything we do every day, no matter what area of our life we are talking about, requires energy and good health. That energy and good health starts with the food we eat and with our lifestyle habits.  After all, if we are ill and flat on our back 24 /7 – nothing else matters and nothing else gets done!  Everything else in our life literally stops while we recover.  I totally understand how very important a healthy, balanced lifestyle is. A healthy balanced life is a whole circle which includes the food we eat, family and relationships, career and finances, spiritual practice, physical exercise and the joy in our life.

My health crisis and subsequent journey to healing gave me the push I needed to become a Certified Health Coach.  In June 2013 I graduated from the Health Coach Training Program at Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) based in New York City. After graduation, I used my knowledge, my previous experience, and new research to write a Health Coaching program (modeled after the 3 month program that led David and I to excellent health). This original program – Flip the Sugar Switch OFF – has evolved over time, changed names and expanded. It is now part of The Sugar Switch™ System, which is a 3 Step System guaranteed to reverse pre-diabetes!

I am very excited  to say that I am a published Author. My first book is called The Sugar Switch™.  I am planning to write more books in the future.

My own personal experience has proven that pre-diabetes can easily be totally reversed!  I am passionate about helping pre-diabetic women to completely reverse the situation so they don’t have to go through the stress and pain of living with diabetes, and sticking needles in their bodies daily in order to be healthy.  I am excited about life!  I am committed to helping others eliminate sugar and refined foods, and create a healthy lifestyle that lasts!

My personal, family life

I have a wonderful life! I come from an English-Irish Canadian family. I was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta and I am the youngest of 4 siblings (2 boys and 2 girls). My husband David and I have been happily married for over 40 years.  We have a grown up son and daughter, a terrific son-in-law and three absolutely fabulous grandchildren (2 boys and 1 girl).  Before becoming a Health Coach, I was a stay-at-home Mom, a line dance instructor, a round dance instructor and a square dance caller. I retired from Calgary’s square and round dance community in 2007.  My lifelong interests have been music, dancing and crafts. I also take loads of digital photos of my family and our travels.  My future goals and ambitions include: traveling, enjoying our grandchildren, and helping as many people as I possibly can to move from pre-diabetes to excellent health.  Life is great!
